Most of us know our zodiac sign. We usually hear about it as children. And in adulthood it remains a topic that keeps finding its way back to us. Sometimes casually in conversation: “What’s your zodiac sign, actually?” Or in that very typical moment when someone mentions their birthday: “Ah. So you’re a Taurus, right?”

Often we don’t quite know why we refer to it at all. Just as often, we’re unsure what to make of it. On the one hand, we tend to dismiss it or not take it seriously. Which makes sense: how could people possibly be sorted into twelve categories, the zodiac signs?

On the other hand, we often sense that somehow – in some form – there does seem to be something to it. Because somewhere we do recognize things we associate with the zodiac signs. The Leo wants attention, the Pisces is empathetic – and somehow we all know a few examples that tell us part of it is true.

These two directions in our reaction are not only interesting to observe, in their contradiction they come close to the heart of the matter: fascination and rejection arise at the same time because the zodiac sign does say something about us – but is only a small part of a much larger picture.

What We Mean When We Say “Zodiac Sign” – And What It Actually Describes

What we commonly call our zodiac sign describes the position of the Sun in one of the twelve signs of the zodiac at the moment of our birth. Astrologically, the Sun represents our essential nature and our fundamental will – and connections between a person and their zodiac sign can genuinely be drawn here.

What is widely overlooked, however, is the fact that astrology looks at far more than just the Sun. It takes into account every planet in our solar system, and beyond that a number of calculated points in the sky. Seen from Earth, all of these stand in particular zodiac signs just as the Sun does – and all of these positions are constantly in motion. Anyone who has ever seen a moving model of our solar system knows the complexity of the different speeds and orbits involved.

So when we speak of “our zodiac sign”, we are speaking of an accurate but profoundly reduced aspect of ourselves. In principle, we all carry something of every zodiac sign within us – only in a highly complex, individual form.

The Moon, for example, stands for our emotions and our subconscious. A person with the zodiac sign Taurus, generally of a measured and calm nature, would become emotionally more explosive with an Aries Moon and emotionally more sensitive with a Pisces Moon. Magazines in particular hand us this image through a wealth of sweeping statements that can conveniently be read in any direction. So if we feel a certain skepticism at the word “horoscope”, that is entirely understandable. And it happens here for a reason similar to the one behind the zodiac sign: the way the word is used is misleading.

A horoscope is, first of all, nothing more than the graphic representation of the planets in our solar system at a particular moment in time. It is based on astronomical facts. Astrology then brings interpretation into play – and that interpretation can take many forms, depending on what we are looking for and what we hope to gain.

If what interests us is our character – “our zodiac sign”, only in its proper complexity – then the birth chart is the right place to look. First of all: we live in a comfortable age. A birth chart (the drawing itself, along with the listed positions) can be calculated free of charge in many places online. These days the greatest challenge lies not in the calculation, but rather in obtaining the correct data for it. Because creating a birth chart requires not only the date and place of birth, but also the exact time of birth. This is usually recorded on the birth certificate or known to one’s parents, though not everyone has access to that information. Astrological methods can help determine the likely time of birth – and I’m happy to support you with that.

Once we have our birth chart in front of us, the question of interpretation arises, and here there are typically three paths:

Researching it yourself. Information is no longer the problem these days – finding your way through the complexity is. Anyone with some knowledge in the field, and a sense of which sources are trustworthy, can read up on their own positions online or in books. Advantage: little to no cost, a private process, and for some temperaments far more exciting than a finished interpretation. Disadvantage: limited know-how can lead to misinterpretation, and we may stay stuck in our own perspective.

There is no longer a person at work here, but a program assembling a horoscope interpretation from prewritten building blocks. Advantage: low cost, immediately available, an outside view. Disadvantage: little personalization, no overarching view of the person, and no possibility of asking questions.

Professional, individual interpretation. These are chart readings, often spoken or written, prepared individually by an astrologer. Here too the building blocks of the birth chart are examined, but this time with an eye on how they interact within the whole, and with an individual focus. Advantage: highly individual, an outside view, consideration of your life situation and questions, plus personal guidance. Disadvantage: higher cost and more lead time.

The overview quickly makes one thing clear, and it’s a pretty lovely one: there is something to be gained from every path – because every option can help us.
